EDUCATION PROGRAM

Education Outreach Program for Students

The Japan/America Society of Kentucky (JASK) is pleased to present Japan in a Suitcase. Japan in a Suitcase is an education outreach program made available by JASK to teach students about Japan. This program is free to schools in and adjacent to Fayette County. For schools outside this area, the program is available for $25 per classroom visit or $50 per day, whichever is less (to cover the cost of travel). This program is a great way to enhance your students' study of Japan!

JASK currently offers the "Day in a Life of a Japanese Child" program (target grades 2nd - 6th). The main objective of this curriculum is to show students the similarities and differences of Japanese school children as compared to themselves while providing basic information about Japan and some Japanese words. Our presenter will bring a suitcase filled with a variety of Japanese school items, such as a backpack, textbooks, a pencil case, a lunch box and more! Large, panel-sized pictures are also used to show students everyday scenes of a "typical" day of a Japanese child.

The presentation lasts approximately 50 minutes. To reserve a visit, please complete the reservation form and send it to JASK at least one week in advance. Teachers requesting a visit should be prepared to remain in their classroom for the entire presentation. Upon receipt of your reservation form, JASK will contact you to arrange the visit. Reservations are taken on a first come basis and subject to availability of JASK staff. Please list more than one date for the visit, if possible. An evaluation will be given to teachers following the presentation, and must be completed within two weeks of the visit. A presenter will visit one classroom at a time to provide for interaction between the presenter and the students.

JASK is now offering a new "Scenes from Japanese Student's Life" program.  The main objective of this program is to show students what it is like to be a Japanese high school student in Japan while providing basic information about the country and its culture.  Please contact us at education@jask.org should you be interested in having our presenter(s) visit your middle and/or high school classrooms.
