UK Offers Japanese Studies Major

The Board of Trustees of the University of Kentucky has approved to offer a Japanese studies major for undergraduate level, starting from fall 2010 semester.

Students will mainly study language and literature, in addition to business, geography, film and economics. The program is going to be taught by 2 committed faculty and professors from other departments and colleges; the program is interdisciplinary. This surely increases interaction between UK students and Japanese people in Kentucky.

JASK Members Go West

JASK would like to thank Consul General, Hiroshi Sato for all of his support at our Consul General’s Cup Bowling Green Golf Tournament in Western Kentucky. The 9th annual golf tournament was a great success. Under the windy, yet humid weather, 6 teams of 3 enjoyed playing golf. Congratulations to the Consul General’s team for winning the Consul General's Cup in a tie decided by a scorecard playoff. The winners get to play again together at Valhalla later this month. The second placed team won the local bourbon, Noah's Mill, donated by the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce.

On the same day, JASK attended the opening day of the 52nd year of the musical, Stephen Foster Story at My Old Kentucky Home State Park in Bardstown, Ky. Marshall Foster Reed, Stephen Foster’s great, great, grandson was present at the show for the first time ever. It was an amazing opportunity for JASK members to experience American classical music at the outdoor amphitheatre.

St. Angelo Promoted to TMMK Chairman, Wil James to Become New TMMK President

Steve St. Angelo will be TMMK's new Chairman on July 1, 2010. Wil James, who worked at TMMK nearly twenty years before advancing in California and Indiana plants, will return to Georgetown to replace St. Angelo as President.

The move allows St. Angelo, a JASK board member, to focus more on his role as Chief Quality Officer for North America. Read about the transition in the Lexington Herald Leader.

Kyocera International President to Speak at UK's Gatton College of Business - JASK Members Welcome

The Gatton College of Business and Economics is hosting its annual Chellgren Lecture on Thursday, November 19, at 3:30 p.m. in the Lexmark Public Room of the UK Main Building. This year’s lecturer is Rodney Lanthorne (’67 BE) of Kyocera Corporation. Mr. Lanthorne is Director of Kyocera Corporation, President of Kyocera International, and Chairman and President, Kyocera Wireless Corporation. Kyocera Corporation, based in Japan, is a leading supplier of telecommunications equipment, office document systems, solar energy products, semiconductor packages, electronic components, cutting tools, and industrial ceramics.

The title of Mr. Lanthorne’s lecture is “For People and For Profit: The History and Philosophy of Kyocera.” The lecture is free and open to the public. All members of the Kentucky business community are cordially invited to attend.
